Terms of use

Interim terms, last updated 28 October 2026. A first legal review has been applied; final review by a lawyer is pending.

These terms cover your use of Roughly. By using it you agree to them. How we handle your information is on the privacy page.

Who runs Roughly

Roughly is run by Brodie Goodall trading as Crosstalk Studios, ABN 25 274 596 671, Canberra, Australia (“we”, “us”).

What Roughly is

Roughly is free. It gives ballpark prices and price comparisons for some kinds of trade work, worked out from published price data and stated assumptions about the job. Every source is cited and shows the date we last checked it.

Roughly isn't a builder or a tradie, doesn't quote on behalf of the businesses it mentions, and doesn't become part of any contract for trade work because it showed you an estimate.

An estimate is a guide, not a quote

A Roughly estimate isn't a quote, a fixed price, a valuation or an offer to do the work. The real price can be higher or lower depending on the property, what the job needs, where you are, labour, materials, access, approvals, safety requirements and things nobody can see until the work starts.

We take reasonable steps to base our estimates on good published price data, but no estimate can allow for every job. Check the sources, the dates we checked them and the notes shown with each estimate. The only real price is a quote from a business for your particular job.

Roughly isn't financial, legal or building advice. The information about licences, approvals, rules and rebates is general. Check it with the regulator or the official source before you rely on it, and check a business's licence before you sign.

Check a quote

Check a quote compares a price with published prices and with prices other people entered on Roughly. It can't tell you whether a particular quote is fair, too high, complete or legally compliant. Before you accept a quote, look at what the business has included and left out, its qualifications and insurance, any approvals needed and its conditions.

Asking for a real quote

For some trades, Roughly can send a quote request to one local business, which the form names before you send anything. Asking is optional, and sending a request doesn't commit you to using that business. Your details are only sent if you tick the box, and only as the consent and the privacy page describe. We never sell your details.

We can't promise that the business will reply, take on the work, offer a particular price or do the job a particular way.

The businesses are independent

The businesses Roughly sends requests to run independently of Roughly. Any contract for the work is between you and the business that does it. That business is responsible for its own quotes, what it tells you, its licences, insurance and work, and its obligations to you.

We're still responsible for our own conduct and legal obligations. Another business being involved doesn't change that.

Using it fairly

You can use Roughly for lawful price research, for yourself or your business. So that it stays useful and available for everyone:

We may block or limit access that breaks these terms.

Content and data

The price guides, legislation and government pages we use belong to their owners and stay under their own rights and licences; we cite them. Roughly's own design, words, branding and calculations belong to Crosstalk Studios or are used with permission.

You're welcome to use the figures Roughly shows you for your own decisions, like planning a job or comparing quotes. Please ask us before you republish a substantial part of Roughly or use it commercially, unless the law lets you.

Changes and availability

We may update price sources, how we calculate estimates, which trades we cover and what features there are. If you tell us about a material error, we'll take reasonable steps to fix it. Roughly may sometimes be unavailable for maintenance or because of technical problems, and it may change, pause or stop.

Your consumer rights and our responsibility

Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or changes any right or remedy you have that the law says can't be excluded, including under the Australian Consumer Law.

We don't promise that an estimate will match the price a business charges you. We're responsible for misleading statements, breaches and our other conduct to the extent the law makes us responsible, and these terms don't put a set dollar limit on that.

Other websites

We link to price sources, businesses and other websites for information and convenience. They have their own terms and privacy policies, and a link isn't necessarily an endorsement.

Complaints and corrections

If you think an estimate, a source, a business's details or anything else on Roughly is materially wrong, email admin@itsroughly.com.au. Tell us the page and what the problem is, and we'll look into it.

The law that applies

These terms are governed by the laws of the Australian Capital Territory, subject to any laws elsewhere that apply regardless. A dispute can be heard by any court with jurisdiction over it.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms when Roughly or the law changes. The date at the top shows when they last changed. Where the law requires it, we'll give notice or ask you to agree again.
